Back in 2017, a friend of mine and myself volunteered in an event organized by the University of Mauritius students about Korean Pop Music on our island. Having analyzed all the positive and negative points of the event, we both wanted to create one in our turn. This is where the term “Kpop Mauritius Festival” emerged.

The objective behind this festival was to create a fun environment where people of all ages would gather up to discover a new culture. From decorations, food, gifts, music, and performances to the guests, the organizing team made sure the South Korean culture was promoted at its best.

The process of making a successful event.

By being only two organizers, we knew that group work was the best choice to get the job done correctly. Thus, we formed a group of volunteers who worked hard to make this event successful. After that first step, a plan about what we wanted to have in the event and how to make it happen, without any legal problem, was set up. Indeed, it was by following this plan that things were going at a constant pace.

The plan was divided into 2 parts. It firstly consisted of making applications to get a place to hold the event, sponsors, and an Occasional Licence for Organisation of Public Entertainment Event. Then, we started getting all the “accessories”, including all the decor and gifts, ready for the festival.

The team took 3 months all together to be ready for the final result.

Event outline.

The Kpop Mauritius Festival was held on the 2nd December 2017, from 10 a.m to 3 p.m at the Tamil League Hall, Reduit.

During the event, the organizing team worked actively to make sure everything was going well under control. Each one of the volunteers had a specific job to do, and so for the co-organizers.

Numerous activities and stands were set up to entertain the public. For instance, we had stage performances, an exposition of Korean Pop Music (Kpop) albums and merch, a photo booth, and the selling of Korean-based goods and food amongst others.

Co-organizers: Sevrine Robinson and Darrielle Laviolette.

Sponsors: The Faceshop and GoYuYu.

Guest of Honor: The South Korean Honorary Consul, Mr. Noel Chong Ah Yan.
